It has been a dream for quite a while to film a choreography video for Carlos & Mirella. They are European Champions in Tango and have competed in several Dutch TV shows and performed with great musicians. So 11 March the time was there, we had Carlos and Mirella in front of the camera!
Dance Video for Carlos & Mirella
We were very grateful for Theater De Voorveghter to allow us to film in their great theatre. Even their light technician was available to help, and he did not need much explanation. The only thing I told him: "I want to have a romantic feel, some lights on the floor and a cinematic look." And he was like: "Say no more.." So he started working, and after trying a few different colours, we found the cinematic look that we wanted.
We had 1,5 hour to film, which is tight, but Carlos & Mirella are professionals, so they are used to repeat, repeat, repeat and work fast. When we were home, of course, we looked at all the footage, and we were so surprised! It was even better than we imagined.
Because it is a Tango we wanted to show as much of the full choreography as possible, so in the edit, I had to make sure I would make smooth transitions between close-ups and total shots. It took around 15 hours to edit and another 5 hours to colour grade. And this is the result!
Tips for beginner filmmakers:
1. Don't use too many red and blue lights in your videos. Many cameras have difficulties reading these colours, because of the Bayer Filter (check Wikipedia). Your footage will look unsharp and pixelated. NO BUENO! Teal and Orange is always a good idea :)
2. Ask for feedback before you deliver your end product. For this tango video, we showed it to my mother and photographer Francy Vos. She gave some excellent feedback that helped to improve some small details.
